NEVER LET ME GO - Based on the acclaimed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (THE REMAINS OF THE DAY), somewhere between science fiction and alternate 1970s history. Carey Mulligan (AN EDUCATION), Keira Knightley (ATONEMENT), and Andrew Garfield (SOCIAL NETWORK) form a boarding-school love triangle, living a seemingly idyllic life which they come to learn is not what it appears...
NIGHT CATCHES US - This indie gem is a love story between former Black Panther members, set amidst political strife and police brutality in 1976 Philadelphia.
CENTURY OF THE SELF - One of the most profound, eye-opening documentaries we have ever seen, from Adam Curtis (THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES). This four-hour BBC series explores the history of consumerist culture. In the 1920s Freud's nephew Edward Bernays envisioned a new kind of irrational citizen, "enslaved by unconscious desires." He created the new field of public relations, paving the way for the "Me Generation" decades later... A highly recommended behind-the-scenes stunner.
LET ME IN - A well-reviewed American remake of the well-reviewed, thoughtful Swedish vampire movie LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Matt Reeves of CLOVERFIELD fame directs this coming-of-age (and never-coming-of-age) tale in which an eternally 12-year-old girl attempts to recruit a lonely young boy as her new devoted companion.
SMALL ISLAND - Adapted from the award-winning novel, this Masterpiece Theatre miniseries stars Naomie Harris as an ambitious young Jamaican woman thrust into the grit of 1940s post-war London.
MONSTERS - British filmmaker Gareth Edwards' indie social commentary sci-fi is being compared to a more atmospheric DISTRICT 9, with less violence. It's set in 2015, six years after a NASA space probe crashes in Mexico and seeds it with extraterrestrial spawn, prompting a quarantine zone and a high border wall to keep the creatures out of the U.S. An American photojournalist and his boss's daughter end up trapped South of the "infected zone," and attempt to travel through it to the border...
THE TILLMAN STORY - A moving documentary about Pat Tillman, the soldier who gave up a multimillion-dollar NFL deal to fight in Afghanistan, then had his death exploited as propaganda for the war. Tillman's family soon uncovered the fact that Tillman had died under mysterious circumstances, covered up to make for a more media-friendly story...
A WOMAN, A GUN AND A NOODLE SHOP - A darkly comic remake of the Coen Brothers' BLOOD SIMPLE, by Zhang Yimou (HOUSE OF THE FLYING DAGGERS), set in feudal China?? Sounds like a must-see to us!
CONVICTION - Based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters (Hilary Swank), who put herself through law school to take on the case of her brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell), convicted of murder and imprisoned for 18 years despite weak evidence.
SAMSON & DELILAH - Two aboriginal teenagers in Central Australia run away from their shanty town to try to find a better life, in this moving "survival love story" from aboriginal director Warwick Thornton. (The release date of this title was postponed from December).
WELCOME TO THE RILEYS - A middle-aged man (James Gandolfini of THE SOPRANOS), in perpetual grief over the death of his daughter, meets a teenage prostitute (Kristen Stewart) at a convention in New Orleans, and takes a genuine fatherly interest in her. The word on the street is that this is well-acted and surprisingly un-sentimental.
UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES - This year's Cannes Palm D'or recipient, and LDV exclusive import, finds Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (TROPICAL MALADY, SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY) at the peak of his powers. Wielding his trademark calm and penchant for stream-of-consciousness with the precision of a master, Apichatpong delivers his bravest and most ambitious film to date. The film delves into the last days of charming Boonmee, and reflects the director's faith in the transmigration of the soul. Recommended for fans of 'deep' films, this one's amazing.
