THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - Must-see adaptation of the first novel in Stieg Larssen's bestselling Millennium Trilogy. In Sweden, a wronged investigative journalist and a troubled young computer hacker are paid to solve the 40-year-old murder of an industrial mogul's niece. The dying man suspects that the murderer is a member of his own family, but it seems that's just the tip of the iceberg of sinister goings-on...

A SINGLE MAN - Fashion designer turned director Tom Ford not only has an exceptional eye for detail, he's made an immensely moving film in which those little details speak volumes. Colin Firth plays a professor struggling to find meaning after the death of his long-time partner Jim, and Julianne Moore is his desperately lonely best friend. A tear-jerker, but so obviously a labor of love that it's worth it.

WHEN YOU'RE STRANGE - This new documentary about the Doors, directed by Tom DiCillo (LIVING IN OBLIVION) and narrated by Johnny Depp, features plenty of never-before-seen footage, including a movie former film-school student Jim Morrison made of himself in the desert. A must-see for music geeks, DiCillo fans, and anyone with a morbid curiosity about the ravings of the Lizard King.

MICMACS - The directors of AMÉLIE and CITY OF LOST CHILDREN return to the surreal slapstick/thriller vibe that made their best effort DELICATESSEN so unique. This time a motley band of junkyard dealers are the David going up against a military-industrial Goliath. Available now, only at La Dolce Video!

BROOKLYN'S FINEST - Gritty new cop thriller from Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY), with a can't-go-wrong cast including Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Ellen Barkin, Wesley Snipes, and Vincent D'Onofrio.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE - BBC favorite Stephen Fry teams up with zoologist Mark Carwardine to seek out the rarest, most endangered animals on Earth. Retracing the route their friend Douglas Adams took 20 years ago in the same pursuit, they brave jungles and snowy mountaintops around the world to see how these animals are faring now.

THE TAKE - This British crime-family series set in 1984 follows the travails of gangster Freddie, recently released from prison and itching to take over the London criminal world. Stars Tom Hardy, who impressed the bloody hell out of us in BRONSON!

IT CAME FROM KUCHAR - Without the legendary underground films of the Kuchar brothers, there would be no PINK FLAMINGOS, among other things. This highly recommended documentary transports us to the New York underground filmmaking scene of the '60s, an idealistic time when art was made for art's sake and the idea of making a living off one's craft was considered anathema. George and Mike Kuchar look back over 54 years of quirky DIY cinema that would go on to inspire everything from John Waters to BARBARELLA.

EYEBORGS - Smart indie sci-fi in which the threat of terrorism has prompted the creation of little mobile robotic cameras, "eyeborgs," which watch over the populace even in their own homes. When a federal agent notices an eyeborg has recorded an event much differently than the way he recalls it, he begins to suspect that the robots are up to something...

The Week of June 29 - The Hot Tub Time Machine Goes CRAZY! PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Monday, 28 June 2010 22:40

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE - 80s teen comedy heartthrob John Cusack is all grown up, but that doesn't stop him from accidentally going back to the 80s in a malfunctioning hot tub, and finding himself in some SURE THING situations... We haven't seen it yet, but how could this possibly not be funny?

WHITE RIBBON - This Oscar-nominated meditation on evil from French director Michael Haneke (CACHE) follows increasingly malevolent events in a small town in pre-WWI Germany. Significantly, the children in the film represent the generation that would grow up to be susceptible to Nazism. Tres Haneke.

CREATION - Charles Darwin struggles with the death of his precocious young daughter, his loyalty to his god-fearing wife, and his own evolving views of life, while working on the infamous tome 'The Origin of Species.' Starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, and based on a biography by Darwin's own great-great-grandson!

PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF - If you suspect that you have ADHD, as I suspect I do, you should first check to make sure you're not just a demigod. Because the symptoms are totally the same.

THE CRAZIES - An intelligent remake of George A. Romero's 1973 not-quite-a-zombie-movie classic. A husband and wife in a small Pennsylvania town find themselves quarantined with the titular "crazies," when a toxic substance is leaked into the water supply, turning the rest of the townsfolk into mindless killers...

DON MCKAY - Film noir comedy starring Thomas Haden Church (SIDEWAYS) and Elizabeth Shue (LEAVING LAS VEGAS). Gentle janitor Don McKay returns to his hometown to visit his terminally ill high school girlfriend, and finds himself embroiled in something mighty peculiar.

NEXT: A PRIMER ON URBAN PAINTING - Documentary exploring graffiti-based art in nine countries including the U.S., France, Holland, Germany, England, Spain, Japan and Brazil. Features interviews and the art of Lee Quiñones, Banksy, Doze Green, Heavyweight, Delta, Os Gemeos, Swoon, Kami, Sasu and many more.

THE PAGAN QUEEN - Based on the Czech legend of Libuse, 8th century Bohemian queen who could see into the future, founded the city of Prague, and fell in love with the leader of an all-maiden army who declared war on the men of Bohemia...

PRETTY BIRD - Quirky independent comedy about a man's quixotic quest to make and sell "rocket belts" to the general public. Stars Paul Giamiatti (SIDEWAYS), Billy Crudup (WATCHMEN), and Kristen Wiig (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE).

STONES IN EXILE - Mick Jagger and Keith Richards produced this story of the making of 'Exile on Main Street,' which many critics regard as their highest achievement ("highest" being a good word here in more ways than one). Archival footage of the Stones at Keith Richard's French villa in 1971, where the record was produced, mixed with intimate interviews of the band, and plenty of bonus features.

TERRIBLY HAPPY - This offbeat Danish psychological thriller has drawn comparisons to the Coen brothers and David Lynch. When a big-city cop is stuck in a small town where the law is a slap on the wrist, he struggles to bring order to the chaos and finds himself in over his head. I know this sounds a little like the plot of HOT FUZZ, but this has been getting a lot of positive buzz that has us intrigued...

BONNIE'S KIDS - This wonderfully ridiculous "lost classic" of 70s exploitation cinema  was one of the grindhouse inspirations for PULP FICTION. In a world where every member of the opposite sex (and some women as well) want nothing more than to "put their creepy hands all over" them, two pretty sisters find themselves entangled in murders and mob heists.
