"NAPOLEON DYNAMITE director Jared Hess scores big by never pretending to be any better than he is."
With so many “quality” films out there vying for your attention, the odds of actually finding one worth watching have shrunk significantly. There is nothing worse than laboring through a film with a promising but mishandled premise. It's always the ones that are supposed to be good that seem to fall short. In fact, the very worst movie-watching experiences are reserved for the ones someone (or in many cases everyone) says are 'soooo amazing', and how we absolutely 'need' to see it.
GENTLEMEN BRONCOS is no such beast. Nobody ever needs to watch a movie like this. It's completely juvenile, full of dumb jokes, populated by unbelievably lame characters and bad special effects. It also happens to be one of my favorite films of the year so far. NAPOLEON DYNAMITE director Jared Hess scores big by never pretending to be any better than he is. Assembling a great cast of relatively untalented unknowns (Jermaine from FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS is the big name, I guess), and spending a whole bunch of money (probably not much compared to most films we've seen), he turned out something so utterly unique that “visionary” almost describes it. -Merrick
