While only half of this year's Oscar nominees have hit DVD yet as of this posting, you can satisfy your award-winner curiosity with these nominees from France's revered Cannes Film Festival, and the younger, hipper Independent Spirit Awards.

UNCLE BOONMEE

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES - This year's Palme D'or winner, and LDV exclusive import, finds Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (TROPICAL MALADY, SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY) at the peak of his powers. Wielding his trademark calm and penchant for stream-of-consciousness with the precision of a master, Apichatpong delivers his bravest and most ambitious film to date. The film delves into the last days of charming Boonmee, and reflects the director's faith in the transmigration of the soul. Also up for Best Foreign Film at the Independent Spirit Awards.

HAHAHA - Won top prize in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes. A lighter Korean film by Hong Sang Soo (WOMAN ON THE BEACH) in which two men reminisce on past visits to a picturesque port town. The audience soon comes to see that the men were there at the same time, their paths entangled, without realizing it...

FILM SOCIALISME - French New Wave pioneer Jean-Luc Godard (BREATHLESS) claims this Palme d'Or nominee, "a symphony in three movements" about Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, is his final film. Godard is one of our Featured Filmmakers.

POETRY - One of the nominees for the Palme d'Or, directed by Lee Chang-dong.  A middle-aged South Korean woman, faced with the discovery of a heinous family crime, finds strength and purpose when she enrolls in a poetry class.

THE HOUSEMAID - Another South Korean nominee for the Palme d'Or, this one is directed by Im Sang-Soo (THE PRESIDENT'S LAST BANG). Eun-yi, the new nanny for a wealthy businessman and his pregnant wife, is seduced by the man and soon finds herself the victim of a cruel game played by his wife, his mother-in-law, and their housekeeper.
