Lars and the Real Girl - Not enough people have seen this movie! Charming without being cloying, quirky without being precious, both romantic and comedic without sacrificing intelligence on either count. Also, Ryan Gosling.
Matador - My husband picked this one night. I resisted, because the description on the box made it sound dumb. Well, I was the dumb one because the movie twists between thriller and comedy in a movie that, oddly enough, turns out to be about friendship.
Animal Kingdom - EEK. So good. Do not watch on a night when you're feeling particularly emotionally vulnerable. But watch it.
Broken Embraces - Love, sex, death and betrayal as told by a master storyteller, Pedro Almodóvar. Delicious.
Lantana - A beautifully filmed noir-esque flick for grown-ups. The slow pace of the unfolding story makes "thriller" sound not quite right -- the suspense is all the more agonizing for the slow build. Also, if you've ever wished older actresses had better parts, you'll appreciate the roles they're given in Lantana.
Biutiful - Intense drama about life and death from Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu with the amazing Javier Bardem at his best. Don't miss "Behind Biutiful" in the extras with the director's insights on working with Bardem and what they were trying to achieve together.
Aguirre, the Wrath of God - Director Werner Herzog's 1972 tale ofa mad conquistador floating down the Amazon in search of the legendary golden cityEl Dorado stars Klaus Kinski at his highest level of craziness. Haunting soundtrack by Krautrock band Popol Vuh.
Traffik - Brilliant British miniseries from 1989 about the heroin trade, tracing the drug from fields in Pakistan to users in England. Even better than Steven Soderbergh's 2000 adaptation.
The Thick of It - Satirical British political comedy series with Peter Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker, the wickedly witty director of communications for the inept Secretary of State for Social Affairs. Followed by feature film In the Loop with Malcolm accompanying the UK Prime Minister to the U.S. as he conspires with the President to get a war going in the Middle East.
Treme: Season 1 - HBO series from the makers of The Wire delves into New Orleans after the deluge. Jazz/funk players, restaurateurs, lawyers, cops, street musicians, Mardi Gras Indians and radio deejays mix, mingle and figure out how to survive post-Katrina.

Fearless Freaks: The Flaming Lips - A biography that will make you like 'em even if u don't, unless yer a dick."
The Forbidden Zone - "Danny Elfman's weirder bro makes one of the most fuckd films evah."
The Mighty Boosh - "The best British show since The Young Ones."
The Devil and Daniel Johnston - "You'll laugh, cry, and imagine that Casper the Friendly Ghost is on yer ass."
FUBAR - Gets xtra mention for its pure Canadianz metal...lite beer rock culture. Dig it! As fellow Canadians Skinny Puppy mighta said, "Giver, giver." A smarter Bill n' Ted, if you can bag that, crackaah?"
