The funniest movie about dating a bulimic... possibly ever.
When people ask me what THE SNAKE is about, I tell them it's about as funny as movies get. The kind of movie that drove me immediately to the DVD's bonus features, lest any tasty morsels remain un-digested. Is this the kind of intelligent humor that you need to rush out and tell your English Lit professor about? Definitely not. THE SNAKE is about one slimy bastard, portrayed by breakout SF comedian Adam Goldstein, who joins an all-female Body Image therapy group in his pathetic attempt to 'get with' a bulimic chick.
Admittedly this all sounds in poor taste, but somehow it works, and THE SNAKE charms from nearly every angle. The co-writer/directing team of Goldstein and Eric Kutner deliberately set out to eschew the trappings of bloated big-budget productions, creating a list of things their film would NOT include: No guns. No realizations while looking into a mirror. No Finding true love... for example. What's left is refreshingly simple, shot on the fly in San Francisco and populated with charismatic performances (including Margaret Cho) of believably ridiculous characters. Totally DIY and totally hilarious. |
